Competitive Comparison

Buyer's Toolbox AP vs. Solvoyo

Merchandise Planning as the Product

Solvoyo's platform spans demand planning, supply and production planning, inventory planning, strategic network design, transportation and fulfillment, S&OP, category and assortment planning, and pricing and promotions — with merchandise financial planning as one solution inside it. Named clients include Apple, P&G, Unilever, Schneider Electric, Renault and The Home Depot. Buyer's Toolbox does retail merchandise planning — OTB, MFP, forecasting, category and WSSI, vendor planning, collections, key items — and has done nothing else since 1992.

Your Planner Holds the Pen

Solvoyo's stated aim is autonomous planning: in their founder's words, "so people are free to focus on the decisions only people can make." They report 95%+ of plans executing untouched, with planners handling the exceptions. Buyer's Toolbox shows the formula in the cell and lets the planner change it — no code, no developer, no ticket. Both are legitimate philosophies, and neither is a criticism of the other. Ask yourself which one your merchants will still be using in month six.

Published Price. Free Working Proof.

Buyer's Toolbox AP starts at $995 a month, published, annual, billed quarterly, no multi-year lock-in — and we build a working proof of concept on your hierarchy and your sales history over one to two weeks before you sign anything. Solvoyo charges a one-time onboarding fee plus a monthly subscription that covers hosting, licences, maintenance and support with no per-seat charge. It is a clean model, but no amounts are published and third-party estimates vary by an order of magnitude. Ask both vendors for a three-year all-in number.

Trusted by planning teams across 20+ countries for over 30 years.

“We went from planning the entire year out in a massive Excel file that took weeks to process, with minimal reforecasting, to planning a year in a matter of days and reforecasting in just a matter of hours.”

A national apparel and sporting goods retailer planning the full year across categories, then reforecasting in-season as the buy moves — their own planners doing the reforecast, in hours.

Comparison Highlights
Aspect Buyer's Toolbox Solvoyo
What the company does Retail merchandise planning, and only that, since 1992. End-to-end supply chain planning and decision automation for retailers, manufacturers and distributors, with retail planning as one part of the platform.
Core planning OTB, MFP, tournament forecasting with automated model selection, category/WSSI, vendor planning, collections, key items — one connected environment. Demand planning, supply and production planning, inventory planning, S&OP, plus retail MFP, OTB, category and assortment planning.
MFP approach Top-down, bottom-up and middle-out, at any hierarchy level, in Cost, Retail and Units. Top-down, middle-out or bottom-up at any level of the product hierarchy, channel, location and time period. Genuine parity — this row is not a differentiator.
Scope beyond planning None. We do not do production, network design or transportation, and we will say so early. A real strength: production planning, strategic network design, transportation and fulfillment planning, S&OP, supply chain visibility.
Allocation and replenishment Basic Allocation & Replenishment: rules-based allocation and replenishment across 250+ door networks, feeding back into the plan. Omnichannel inventory replenishment is part of the platform. Ask to see store-level allocation and how its output lands back in the open-to-buy.
Data science Price and markdown optimization, elasticity, promotion impact, lost sales, affinity, cannibalization — embedded in the planning environment. Optimization science is the founding discipline, with pricing and promotions and AI forecasting. Ask which of those six retail models they run, and where the output lands.
Exception alerting Exception Intelligence: stockouts, overstocks and plan variances ranked by dollar impact, in a weekly package with recommended actions. Solvi, their AI agent, monitors sales, margin and inventory against plan and flags diverging sell-through with GMROI-based recommendations. Ask to see the ranking by dollar impact, and who receives it.
Wholesale Item-level orders, backorders, cancellations and returns, reserved stock, retailer accounts, availability-to-promise — reflowing into OTB. Wholesale and distribution is a named industry. Ask to see a cancelled wholesale order reflow into open-to-buy.
Verticals and references North American specialty retail: farm and ranch, specialty apparel, footwear, outdoor, museum retail, pharmacy, multi-category. 20+ countries. A mix — global CPG and manufacturing (P&G, Unilever, Schneider Electric, Renault) alongside large-format and international retail (The Home Depot, DeFacto, A101, Gratis). Ask for three references at your door count in your vertical.
Track record Merchandise planning since 1992 — 34 years, 200+ implementations, 20+ countries. Founded 2005 in Boston by operations research scientists — 21 years, 100+ rollouts across four continents. Offices in Boston, Istanbul, Ankara and Athens.
Integration Epicor, Celerant, Mi9, KWI, Horizon, Retail Pro, Jesta, Aptos, D365, NetSuite, SAP, plus custom and legacy systems. Multi-currency. Major ERPs including SAP and Oracle, via APIs, EDI, XML and database-to-database. Ask about your specific merchandising system of record.
Deployment Cloud, on-premise or hybrid. Your IT team decides. Cloud-native SaaS on AWS.
Pricing model Published: from $995/month. Annual, billed quarterly, no multi-year lock-in. One-time onboarding fee plus a monthly subscription covering hosting, licences, maintenance and support, unlimited users, no per-seat charge. No amounts published.
Proof before contract Free working proof of concept on your hierarchy and sales history, in 1–2 weeks. Roughly 12 weeks to production on industry templates. Ask whether they will build a working plan on your data before contract.
Who changes the plan The planner — formulas, KPIs, hierarchy levels, views, in the UI, no ticket. The model, with planners handling exceptions. Ask what a new KPI or hierarchy level costs twelve months post-go-live, and who performs it.
Common Questions

Answering your questions.

Solvoyo's MFP does top-down, middle-out and bottom-up with OTB, same as you. What's different?

+

Nothing, on that row, and we would rather say so than pretend. Their merchandise financial planning sets sales, margin and inventory targets top-down, middle-out or bottom-up at any level of the hierarchy, channel, location and period, with OTB automated against approved targets. That is the same shape of capability we sell. The difference is everything around it: whether the system knows farm and ranch, footwear, outdoor, museum retail and pharmacy assortments; whether the data science is retail-specific — markdown optimization, elasticity, promotion impact, lost sales, affinity, cannibalization; whether exceptions arrive ranked by dollar impact; whether it connects to the merchandising system you actually run; and how long the vendor has been doing only this. We had been building retail merchandise planning for thirteen years before Solvoyo was founded.

We need supply chain planning too — production, network, transport.

+

Then look at Solvoyo seriously, because we do not do that and will not pretend we do. Production planning, strategic network design, transportation and fulfillment, S&OP — that is their platform, and it is a genuine strength. The question worth answering first is which problem is urgent. If the buy is landing wrong and the plan lives in a spreadsheet, that is a merchandise planning problem and you can solve it in weeks. If your constraint is the network moving goods, ours is the wrong product and we will tell you so on the first call.

They automate end to end. Isn't that better than manual planning?

+

It is not manual versus automated — the system does the calculation either way. Buyer's Toolbox forecasts, calculates the OTB, allocates, replenishes and surfaces exceptions without anyone typing a number. The real question is who can change it. In February the buy shifts, a category turns, and the plan needs to work differently than it did in October. In our system a planner opens the cell, sees the formula, and changes it. Ask Solvoyo what that same change looks like: who makes it, how long it takes, and whether the answer involves their team.

They're Boston-based with a PhD founder and twenty years in market. Aren't they equivalent?

+

They are credible, and size is not the argument. Solvoyo was founded in Boston in 2005 by operations research scientists, its founder holds a doctorate in operations research, and they report more than 100 rollouts across four continents for names like P&G, Unilever and The Home Depot. What differs is specialization. Every release we have shipped since 1992 has gone into retail merchandise planning, and our references are North American specialty retailers — 20 to 500 doors, often multiple banners, often on a merchandising system that predates the cloud. Ask both vendors for three references at your door count in your vertical, and call them.

How do we compare fairly?

+

Three tests, given to both. First, a working system built on your own data before any contract — insist your planners can use it, not just watch a demo. Second, a three-year total cost covering licence, onboarding, implementation, seats and support. Third, the one most buyers skip: a scripted change request. Ask each vendor to price and schedule the same three changes twelve months after go-live. Add a hierarchy level. Add a custom KPI. Restate a formula.

Next Step

Proof on Your Own Data.

We will build a working proof of concept on your hierarchy, your categories and your sales history — no cost, no commitment — and your planners will drive it, not watch it. If what you actually need is production, network and transportation planning, we will tell you to look elsewhere.

  • Live proof-of-concept with your data
  • See real results before you commit
  • No lengthy contracts or hidden fees
